Tanzania is interested in India’s military prowess

A delegation from Tanzania travelled to India to examine the nation’s domestic defence industry and look into potential joint ventures. Leading the delegation of Senior Armed Forces officers was Tanzania’s Minister of Defense, Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax. On August 29, they paid a visit to the Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) ammunition and missile system manufacturing facilities.

Senior representatives from the Tanzanian Armed Forces, the Indian Defence Advisor accredited to Tanzania, and representatives from the Indian Ministry of Defence were with the minister as they received a briefing on the export-ready goods that BDL is supplying.

“Honoured by the visit of HE Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax, Defence Minister, Tanzania at BDL today. The visit will further strengthen Defence Cooperation existing between India and Tanzania and will give a fillip to the export of ‘Made in India’ defence products.”

Shri P Radhakrishna, Director (Production), BDL, welcomed the Minister. Senior BDL officials including Dr. Upender Vennam, IPoS, Chief Vigilance Officer, and Shri N Srinivasulu, Director (Finance), were present. At BDL, there was also a showcase of goods from other Defense Public Sector Undertakings, the private sector, and start-ups.

According to a press statement from the BDL, the corporation is prepared to ship to the African country drone-delivered bombs, drone-delivered missiles, underwater weapons, countermeasure dispensing systems, and anti-tank guided missiles. In a tweet, BDL further wrote, “The visit will further strengthen Defence Cooperation existing between India and Tanzania and will give a fillip to the export of ‘Made in India’ defence products”.

Particularly in the domain of defence, Tanzania and India already have a cooperation. The formation of a task force to create a five-year “future road plan” for increasing defence cooperation between Tanzania and India was agreed upon on August 26. Tanzania also promised to host the next Joint Defence Cooperation meeting as soon as possible. This was decided upon during the Friday bilateral discussion between Tanzanian Minister of Defense and National Service Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

“A wide range of issues concerning bilateral, regional, and defence industrial cooperation were discussed during the meeting. The two Ministers reviewed the existing military-to-military activities and discussed ways to enhance cooperation in all domains with a focus on defence industry cooperation,” a Ministry statement said.

Mr. Singh also invited his Tanzanian counterpart to the ‘India-Africa Defence Dialogue’ and DefExpo which is scheduled to be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat between October 18 to 22.
