Under Congress, India’s economy was in 12th spot, but PM Modi …: Amit Shah
The Union Home Minister claimed that when the Congress was in office, it had done everything in its ability to devastate Gujarat.
India’s economy was ranked eleventh when Narendra Modi took office (in 2014), but under the guidance of the prime minister, Home Minister Amit Shah, it has now surpassed England to become the fifth largest economy in the world. He was speaking to an audience in Ahmedabad.
“India was the 11th largest economy in the world. Congress had brought it down to 12th spot. It was Atal Bihari Vajpayee who had raised it again to the 11th position. After Narendra Modi became the PM, he took it to the 5th position,” he said.
The Union Home Minister claimed that when the Congress was in office, it had done everything in its ability to devastate Gujarat.
“The Congress had left no stone unturned to destroy Gujarat. But today, Gujarat is known for its model of development. Curfews haven’t been imposed in Gujarat in the last 20 years. Riots were common during Congress’s rule. Today, no one even dares to engage in communal riots,” the minister said.
He said that the Sardar Sarovar dam project was being delayed by the Congress.
In order to ensure that the waters of the Narmada river reach the parched regions of Ahmedabad and Kutch districts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed the regal title of King Bhagirath when serving as the chief minister of Gujarat, according to Shah.
According to folklore, King Bhagirath performed rigorous penance to bring the Ganga river from the heavens to the earth.
“The foundation stone of the Narmada project was laid by former PM Jawaharlal Nehru when I was born (in 1964). But, the previous Congress governments did nothing since then. No work was done on the project till 2002. The project finally picked up pace when Narendra Modi became the chief minister in 2002. Thanks to him, the parched regions of Ahmedabad and Kutch received Narmada waters,” Shah, on a two-day visit to Gujarat, said.
Amit Shah opened a flyover in the Bhadaj hamlet on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on the first day of his visit.
To relieve traffic congestion on the busy Bhadaj circle of the ring road, the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) constructed the six-lane flyover at a cost of Rs 73 crore.
