Reliance Group rebukes Cong claim on its inexperience in defence sector

The Reliance Group has rejected Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president Dinesh Gundu Rao’s claim that it lacks experience in the defence and aviation sectors.

Last week, Rao criticised the Rafale deal and accused the BJP-led Centre for choosing Reliance Group over the Bengaluru-based Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which the previous Congress-led UPA government had included in its agreement with the French-based Dassault.

Rao had said the Reliance Group lacked experience in the sector. “Reliance Group owns the largest shipyard in the private sector. Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd (RNEL) at Pipavav, Gujarat.

RNEL was awarded a contract for five warships from the Indian Navy through a competitive process in May 2011.

Similarly, last year RNEL won a contract for 14 Fast Patrol Vessels and Training Ship through a competitive bidding process,” the company said in a statement.

“Reliance Infra, with 100% stake in Reliance Defence, is a registered vendor with the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

RInfra recently won the contract for Fabrication of Hull & Turret for Arjun Tank, the first one in the private sector through a competitive process against all major Indian defence companies,” the company said.

“Therefore, it would be incorrect to say that Reliance Group has no experience in the sector.”
