Regarding India’s position on the conflict in Ukraine, the US declares, “We would take PM Modi at his word.”

When asked about India's stance on the situation between Russia and Ukraine and Prime Minister Modi's appeal for an end to the fighting, Patel responded in this way.

Washington: The United States praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance on the Ukrainian conflict on Friday, which calls for an end to all forms of violence and the search of diplomatic solutions.

“We would take PM Modi at his words and welcome those comments when they took place. Other countries will make their own decision on engagement with Russia. We continue to coordinate with allies to mitigate impacts of war,” said State Department’s Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel during a press conference on Thursday.

When asked about India’s stance on the situation between Russia and Ukraine and Prime Minister Modi’s appeal for an end to the fighting, Patel responded in this way.

On the fringes of the SCO conference in Samarkand earlier in September, Prime Minister Modi had informed Russian President Vladimir Putin that “today’s era isn’t of war.” Additionally, he underlined the necessity to find solutions to the issues of food security, fuel security, and fertilisers.

The State Department spokeswoman responded to a question on India’s involvement in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict by saying, “Any country interested in participating in peace and interested in ending this (Russia-Ukraine) war must do so in close partnership with Ukrainian partners.”

Notably, the State Department’s remarks came hours after PM Modi’s Friday phone call with Vladimir Putin.

“Following up on their meeting in Samarkand on the sidelines of the SCO Summit, the two leaders reviewed several aspects of the bilateral relationship, including energy cooperation, trade and investments, defence and security cooperation, and other key areas,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement.

Prime Minister Modi repeated his plea for dialogue and diplomacy as the best means of resolving the ongoing violence in Ukraine.

“Prime Minister briefed President Putin on India’s ongoing Presidency of the G20, highlighting its key priorities. He also looked forward to both countries working together during India’s Chairship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation,” the PMO said.

The leaders decided to communicate frequently going forward.
