U.S. asks Pakistan to arrest Hafiz Saeed and charge him for his crimes

In a statement, the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad expresses “deep concern” at his release from house arrest.

The United States on Friday expressed its “deep concern” over the release of Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed. It said the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) leader should be “arrested and charged for his crimes”.

In a statement, the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad said, “The United States is deeply concerned that Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) leader Hafiz Seed has been released from house arrest in Pakistan. LeT is a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization responsible for the death of hundreds of innocent civilians in terrorist attacks, including a number of American citizens. The Pakistani government should make sure that he is arrested and charged for his crimes.”

The statement by the embassy’s spokesperson Heather Nauert said, “In May 2008, the United States Department of the Treasury designated Saeed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224. Saeed was also individually designated by the United Nations under UNSCR 1267 in December 2008 following the November 2008 Mumbai attack in which six American citizens were killed.”

Ms. Nauert said the LeT and several of its front organisations, leaders, and operatives remained under both the State Department and the Treasury Department sanctions. He pointed out that Saeed carried a $10 million on his head.
