A successful test of a submarine-launched ballistic missile was conducted by INS Arihant

The INS Arihant is a 6,000-ton SSBN (ship submersible ballistic nuclear, or SSBN) submarine that is capable of transporting nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles.

The launch of a ballistic missile by India’s strategic strike submarine INS Arihant on Friday was successful, according to the defence ministry. According to the statement, the missile was tested to a predetermined range and it accurately hit the target region in the Bay of Bengal, validating all operational and technological characteristics.

“The successful user training launch of the SLBM (submarine launched ballistic missile) by INS Arihant is significant to prove crew competency and validate the SSBN program, a key element of India’s nuclear deterrence capability,” the ministry said.

“A robust, survivable and assured retaliatory capability is in keeping with India’s policy to have ‘credible minimum deterrence’ that underpins its ‘No First Use’ commitment,” it said in a statement.

August 2016 saw the secret induction of INS Arihant, the nation’s first indigenous nuclear-powered submarine, into the Indian Navy.

The INS Arihant is a 6,000-ton SSBN (ship submersible ballistic nuclear, or SSBN) submarine that is capable of transporting nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles.

The submarine’s 83 MW pressurised light-water reactor, which was created by India’s Atomic Energy Commission, can fire nuclear warheads.
