An Indian cotton import is requested by a Pakistani trade organisation to the federal government.

Import of 2.5 million bales from India will be required

Islamabad: A Pakistani trade organisation has requested permission from the Shehbaz Sharif administration to import cotton from India due to the terrible state of the nation’s textile industry following devastating floods.

The Pakistan Textile Exporters Association is recommending commerce with India through Wagah to meet the increased export orders in the wake of losses incurred by cotton farmers in Sindh and Punjab, according to the Dawn daily.

The Pakistani daily cited preliminary estimates from exporters and stated that a total of 25% of the standing cotton crop had been damaged. It also stated that there may be a potential scarcity of raw materials in Pakistan.

The Pakistani government established a committee on Wednesday to engage with seed corporations and help them provide cutting-edge cotton seeds to the local market.

The decision to create the committee was made at a crucial meeting where stakeholders were consulted and recommendations for increasing the output and area of cotton crops were reviewed, according to the report.

Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) Patron in Chief Khurram Mukhtar told Dawn on Wednesday, “We have approached Finance Minister Miftah Ismail to look into one of our demands.” Mukhtar stated that after September 15 the true estimates of cotton demand would be made.

He remarked, “We may need to import 2.5 million bales from India.”

According to rumours that surfaced last month, Pakistan was looking to restore commerce with India following the country’s record-breaking floods.

International organisations have contacted the government of Pakistan, according to Finance Minister Miftah Ismail, to request permission to import goods from India across the land border.

The Pakistani government did clarify that it can only be taken into consideration following a supply shortage analysis and consultation with coalition partners and other important parties.

The government will decide whether to permit imports based on supply shortages, after consulting its coalition partners and key stakeholders, the federal minister had tweeted. “More than one international agency has approached the govt to allow them to bring food items from India through the land border,” the minister had written.
