First Ride review: New Honda Activa 6G activated.

New Honda Activa 6G review: We ride the new Activa 6G to find out if the scooter is a worthy successor to the outgoing model.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The new Activa is based on the chassis used by the Activa 125.
  • The all-new Activa 6G BS-VI is developed with as many as 26 patent applications.
  • When it comes to ride and handling, the new Activa 6G is a drastic improvement.

Honda launched the Activa in the Indian market at a time when the rest had lost hope on scooters. From then on, the Activa intermittently has been the best selling scooter in the country. Needless to say, it has nearly been the best selling scooter all the way through. Now the Activa has entered an all-new generation in the form of the Activa 6G. So there is a lot to live up to.

The new Activa is based on the chassis used by the Activa 125. It is larger now and is longer than before. The wheelbase has increased too. Thanks to the new dimensions, the floorboard space has also increased considerably. This offers a considerably high level of comfort onboard. The seat height too remains comfortable. The new Activa 6G also gets a revised design and in comes an LED headlight (in the deluxe variant). The scooter now also gets a telescopic front suspension and uses a 12in front wheel. Again both these features are something we have been harping for. The Activa 6G keeps the old school in the form of the instrument panel. It is an all analogue unit which comes with a speedo, odo and fuel gauge and tell tales. The switchgear is new too and oozes quality. The combination switch not only offers access to the key but also operates the new external fuel filler and also the seat. The underseat storage remains unchanged.

The BS6 norms have put immense pressure on these small engines and, as a result, there has been a lot of technologies which have been incorporated in these motors. While the displacement on the Activa remains to be same at 110cc, there has been a plethora of jargons added to it. Things like HET, ESP and fuel injection among others. The all-new BS-VI Activa 6G is developed with as many as 26 patent applications. But the good news is that the Activa now is lighter than before. As far as the specs are concerned, the Activa 6G now churns out 7.68bhp and 8.79Nm of torque.

The Activa 6G keeps the old school in the form of the instrument panel:Start her up and the Activa 6G feels tad vibey as compared to the outgoing version. However, twist the wrist and things settle down quickly. The vibes reduce and the comfort factor is back. Up to 60kmph, the Activa 6G accelerates brisk but things slow down once past 60kmph. It hits a top speed of a speedo indicated 90kmph. Trundling around town the Activa 6G will keep the rider happy.

The combination switch in the Activa 6G not only offers access to the key but also operates the new external fuel filler and also the seat. When it comes to ride and handling, the Activa 6G is a drastic improvement. Thanks to the new suspension setup handling has improved and one can now attack corners with more confidence. Agility too is top class. The only oddity here is braking. Thanks to the absence of discs, the Activa feels a bit slow to stop. Bite is prevalent but it sure takes a little more space to stop.
