In conjunction with Air Force Day on October 8, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will formally establish its first unit of locally produced Light Combat Helicopters (LCHs) in Jodhpur during the first week of October.

A defence official announced on Monday that ten LCHs will be inducted in the first batch, completing one unit. According to the official, the IAF is currently calculating the overall number of LCHs that will be purchased.

The IAF is now using 22 Boeing AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, replacing the older Russian Mi-25 and Mi-35 attack helicopters, of which one squadron has been phased out. The current Mi-35 squadron is now undergoing maintenance, which will prolong its life by many years, the official stated.

The only aerospace and defence expo in Africa that combines an air show and a trade exhibition is called Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD). The AAD Expo, which is held every two years in the administrative capital of South Africa, City of Tshwane, is one of the country’s major contributors to GDP in show years and is recognised as a national asset.

At AAD 2022, HAL displayed a comprehensive and powerful weapons suite. The aforementioned picture makes clear that the LCH has the potential to transport ATGMs, an air-to-air missile and rocket kit, as well as other cutting-edge defensive systems.
