India receives backing from France at the G20 and UNSC

Starting Monday, India will legally take over the G20 presidency, opening up a rare opportunity for the nation to contribute to the global agenda on urgent matters of worldwide significance.

New Delhi: The French ambassador to India, Emmanuel Lenain, has extended his nation’s full support as India on December 1 takes over the leadership of the G20 presidency and the chair of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of December.

“Today, India takes over the G20 presidency for a year and UNSC (United Nations Security Council) chair for December. As we strive to keep the world united in the face of unprecedented challenges, we are glad to see India in the driver’s seat. India can count on France’s full support,” French envoy to India Emmanuel Lenain tweeted.

Starting Monday, India will legally take over the G20 presidency, opening up a rare opportunity for the nation to contribute to the global agenda on urgent matters of worldwide significance.

According to a Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announcement, the G20 is the leading platform for global economic cooperation, comprising nearly 85% of the world’s GDP, over 75% of its commerce, and roughly 2/3 of its people.

India will host over 200 meetings in 32 distinct industries at various venues throughout India during the G20 Presidency. The G20 Summit, which will take place in 2019, will be one of the most notable international events that India will host.

S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs (EAM), stated on Tuesday that New Delhi would like to use its group presidency to represent the interests and issues of the global south in the present.

With today’s start of its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, India also takes over the rotating monthly presidency of the G20.

India has the presidency for the second time after having it in August of last year, when the government prioritised maritime security, UN peacekeeping and counter-terrorism.

As an elected member, India will preside over the Security Council for its two-year term. According to UNSC norms of procedure, the Council president is alternated among the 15 UNSC members in alphabetical order.
