Nariman Point and Colaba in Mumbai will be connected by a four-lane bridge, reducing travel time to just five minutes.

It will be the city's third sealink, linking Nariman Point and Colaba, and it will relieve congestion on the existing route and make it easier to use both the old and new roadways, preventing bottlenecks.

The Nariman Point to Colaba missing link project, developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), will address the island city’s traffic troubles by significantly reducing the current trip time, saving commuters in this residential/office sector both time and fuel.

Examining the project: Between Nariman Point and Colaba is a 1.6 km long, four-lane bridge that spans the bay. a jetty, cycle and pedestrian paths, and viewing gallery has also been planned.

According to an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) model, the overall project cost is Rs 284.55 crore.

Work started: In August, a new tender was announced, inviting participation from the bidders.

Timeline for the project: The MMRDA plans to complete the civil work within two years of the contractor’s appointment.

Work is now in the tendering phase

Project specifics: The MMRDA has re-invited the offer after the interested agencies requested additional time. The 1.6 km sea bridge project connecting Nariman Point to Colaba was initially designed in 2008 and a tender was floated earlier this year.

Meaning: The distance between Colaba and Nariman Point is over a kilometre geographically, but using the city’s road system, it is extended by five kilometres, a trip that requires more than 20 minutes to complete during rush hour. A direct connection that crosses the water will reduce the distance and provide continuous connectivity. The five-minute drive from Nariman Point to Colaba will be made possible by this 1.6 km long, four-lane bridge across the bay, saving both time and gasoline. In addition, the new bridge will serve as the final link in the construction of the coastal route.

At the moment, commuters must use Captain Prakash Pethe Marg and deal with heavy traffic on Madam Cama Road, in Mantralaya, in the Fort, and near the Manora MLA Hostel.

When combined with existing and newly constructed developments like the Eastern Freeway and the new that is proposed to be extended to Marine Drive, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), Sewri-Worli connector, and Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Coastal Road, the proposed sea link will create a ring road around Mumbai.

A security clearance is still pending because the link will go through territories controlled by the coast guard and the navy. Also required is an environmental clearance.

Fishermen won’t be hindered by the bridge because it will allow a corridor for boats to pass with a 100-meter span below the bridge, so there won’t be any negative effects on fishing.

According to an MMRDA official, it will be the city’s third sealink, connecting Nariman Point to Colaba. It will help relieve congestion on the present route and make it easier to access both new and existing roadways, reducing bottlenecks.
