By 2047, the Indian Navy will be entirely “Atmanirbhar”: Commodore R. Hari Kumar

In New Delhi: According to Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar, the Indian Navy would be “fully” self-sufficient by 2047, producing everything from ships and submarines to spare parts and weapons.

He said there was much to be learned from the Russia-Ukraine battle, which saw the use of cutting-edge technologies, cyberspace, and many types of precision munitions.

The need for “Atmanirbharta” (self-reliance) to defend one’s homeland has been highlighted by the confrontation between the two nations, he claimed.

“By 2047, we will have a complete indigenous Navy, whether it be ships, or submarines, aircraft, unmanned systems, weapons, the entire complex.

“We will be completely ‘Atmanirbhar’ Navy. That is what we are targeting,” Admiral Kumar said replying to questions at the India Defence Conclave 2022.

When asked if the Russia-Ukraine crisis had an impact on the Indian Navy’s supply chain, he responded, “As of now, we are not under pressure. Our spare parts inventory is sufficient. We haven’t slowed down in our ship or aircraft deployment today. We have taken action to enlist the aid of our own sector.

The first small patrol boat, INS Ajay, was manufactured exclusively in India in 1961, marking the beginning of the Indianization Drive for the Indian Navy, he claimed.

“Since then, we have progressed a lot,” he added.
