Gujarat Election Results 2017: CM Vijay Rupani wins with over 25,000 margin; Alpesh Thakor, Jignesh Mevani take lead

The BJP is likely to retain Gujarat for the record sixth time. But, who is to be credited If lotus blooms once again in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home-turf. While it was all Modi’s show during poll campaign but people knew that it would be Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani who would administer -if BJP wins- the state. So, who the voters have voted for? Narendra Modi or Vijay Rupani. Going by popular belief, people in Gujarat believe that PM Modi still rules the state no matter who the chief minister is.

The Election Commission has put out number for 181 of 182 seats. The BJP is leading on 101 seats and the Congress is on 73.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has won the election with over 25,000 votes from Rajkot West. This seat is significant as Narendra Modi contested from Rajkot West as Gujarat chief minister in 2002. This seat has been with the BJP for over three decades. Current Gujarat CM Rupani had won this seat in the 2014 bypoll.

Vijay Rupani got 52155 votes as Congress’ Indranil Rajguru was at distant second with 29938 votes. Rajkot West is a Patel stronghold and Hardik Patel campaigned heavily here against the BJP. Sensing the chance, the Congress brought in Indranil Rajyaguru from neighbouring Rajkot East to exploit the caste equation in the constituency.

Here’s how heavyweights are doing in Gujarat:

Independent candidate Jignesh Mevani leading by 10,785 votes in Vadgam.

Congress leader Alpesh Thakor is ahead by 4539 votes in Radhanpur.

Gujarat Deputy CM Nitin Patel is trailing by 2,000 votes in Mehsana.

Congress leader Shakti Sinh Gohil and Arjun Modhwadia are trailing.
