Storm “Ian” forces NASA to postpone the launch of their Artemis I moon-orbiting mission

Florida: Owing to the historic unmanned Moon-orbiting mission, Artemis I, being scheduled to launch on Tuesday, NASA has postponed the launch due to Tropical Storm “Ian,” which is expected to intensify as it approaches Florida.

“NASA is foregoing a launch opportunity Tuesday, Sept. 27, and preparing for rollback, while continuing to watch the weather forecast associated with Tropical Storm Ian,” the space agency said in its press release.

Teams opted to stop working on the Tuesday launch date during a meeting on Saturday morning so they could set up the necessary systems for returning the Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket to the Vehicle Assembly Building.

In order to allow for extra data collection and analysis, engineers postponed making a final judgement about the roll until Sunday. The rollback would start late Sunday night or early Monday morning if Artemis I managers decide to do so.

“The agency is taking a step-wise approach to its decision-making process to allow the agency to protect its employees by completing a safe roll in time for them to address the needs of their families while also protecting the option to press ahead with another launch opportunity in the current window if weather predictions improve,” the press release added.

The National Hurricane Center, US Space Force, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration continue to give NASA with the most recent data.
