The Indian Army plans to purchase 4.25 4.25 Lakh Carbines
These carbines would replace the Army's present stock of outdated 9mm British Sterling 1A1 submachine guns.
In November of this year, the Indian Army plans to issue a call for proposals to local gun manufacturers for the delivery of more than 4.25 lakh carbines. These carbines will be purchased for the troops stationed in the forward positions along the Line of Actual Control with Pakistan and the LAC with China.
According to the document, the Army is looking to buy 5.56mm carbines with a minimum effective range of 200 metres. It should be recalled that the defence ministry just approved domestic defence acquisitions of Rs 28,732 crore barely two months ago. These purchases included carbines, armed drone swarms, and bulletproof vests.
These carbines would replace the Army’s present stock of outdated 9mm British Sterling 1A1 submachine guns.
The Indian Army’s list of requirements includes firing from a fixed mount at a 100-meter distance. A set of nine hits from ten rounds fired should measure 15 cm by 15 cm. It must feature a removable, hardened bayonet with a cover that is appropriate and a blade that is at least 120mm long.
The carbines must be operated in temperatures between -200°C and -100°C, and they should weigh no more than three kilogrammes without a magazine and accessories. A minimum service life of 15 years or 15,000 rounds ought to be provided.
