Navy gifts decommissioned Sea Harrier aircraft to Indian Military College

Vice-Admiral Bimal Verma, commander-in-chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command, on Friday gifted decommissioned aircraft Sea Harrier-654 to Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) in Dehradun.

Verma is an alumnus of RIMC. After being in service for as long as 33 years, Sea Harrier-654 was decommissioned by the Indian Navy in 2016.

This is not the first time that such a gesture has been made by the forces towards the prestigious RIMC, which is considered to be the feeder institution for NDA, Indian Naval Academy and other wings of the armed forces.

The college campus is now dotted with various weapons and equipment given to it by the forces. These include an IAF aircraft and an Army tank.

“Sea Harrie-654 and I have an emotional connection. Since I joined the Navy just after the aircraft was inducted, both of us have spent approximately the same number of years in the force.

We have also reached the end of our professional lives more or less at the same time.

While the aircraft has been decommissioned, I am nearing my retirement. Hope it acts as a source of motivation for all the boys here,” Verma said.

“In the past, we have had other relics which have found a place in our campus with the purpose of motivating the boys to join the forces,” said P K Sharma, vice principal, RIMC..
