Bypolls for three Lok Sabha seats on March 11

Elections will be held for Bhabua and Jehanabad Assembly constituencies on the same day.

The Election Commission on Friday announced the dates for by-elections in three Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh and two Bihar Assembly constituencies.

The Lok Sabha constituencies of Gorakhpur and Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh, and Araria in Bihar will go to polls on March 11.

Elections will be held for Bhabua and Jehanabad Assembly constituencies on the same day.

Nominations will be accepted till February 20. The nominations will be scrutinised on February 21 while last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 23. Counting of votes will be held on March 14.

The dates have been decided after taking into consideration various factors such as local festivals, weather conditions and publication of electoral rolls among others, a media release from the ECI said.

Byelections were necessitated in Gorakhpur and Phulpur after Yogi Adityanath and Keshav Prasad Maurya vacated their seats to become the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Araria seat fell vacant after the death of RJD MP Mohammed Taslimuddin.

The BJP won the Bhabua Assembly seat in 2015 but its MLA Anand Bhushan Pandey passed in November last year.

Former State health minister Mundrika Singh Yadav won from Jehanabad, but he succumbed to dengue in last October.
