IAF officer arrested for espionage

He had allegedly passed classified information to Pakistan’s ISI.

The Delhi police special cell unit on Thursday arrested an Indian Air Force (IAF) officer on charges of espionage and passing on classified information to Pakistani intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Group Captain Arun Marwaha was detained by the IAF counter-intelligence wing on January 31. Police is also probing if there are others involved in this ring.

“During routine counter intelligence surveillance carried out by the IAF’s Central Security and Investigation Team it was discovered that an officer was indulging in certain unwanted activities through unauthorized electronic devices which is against existing orders,” said a police official.

The IAF handed over the detained official to Delhi police for further investigation.

A senior official with the Delhi police special cell told that on Thursday, the officer posted at the IAF headquarters in Delhi, has been arrested and charged under the Official Secrets Act. His phone and laptop have been confiscated.

The IAF official was produced before a magistrate at Patiala Court from where he has been sent to five days’ police custody.

“The IAF officer befriended the ISI agents on Facebook – they had fake profiles as women – a few months ago and they started chatting regularly on WhatsApp. They allegedly even exchanged intimate messages and pictures,” said a police official.

The IAF officer started passing on sensitive Defence information to a woman via WhatsApp and Facebook. The “unwanted” activities were discovered by the IAF during routine counter-intelligence surveillance, sources said.
