BSNL clarifies on 13-digit phone numbers; it is only for machines
The lack of expansion of M2M in the letter may have triggered the confusion that it is applicable to all users.
Clarifying on some reports that all mobile phone numbers will be shifted to 13 digits from 10 digits, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has tweeted that it is applicable only to numbers used by machines to communicate with other machines.
In December, 2016 the Department of Telecommunications had issued a notice that 13-digit numbering has been approved for all SIM-based machine-to-machine communication.
Based on this, on February 5, BSNL had sent a letter to its suppliers and various Circles that the new system will be implemented from July 1, 2018 and that all network systems should be ready for this ahead of that.
The lack of expansion of M2M in the letter may have triggered the confusion that it is applicable to all users.
A SIM-based M2M communication is a function of the growing Internet of Things, the world of interconnected smart machines. Here the machines will use the special M2M SIMs to transfer data.
