Increasing number of passenger vehicle shipments via Indian Railways

From 1.5% in 2013–14 to 16% in 2021–22, the percentage of passenger vehicle transit using railroads increased.

13 September, New Delhi, India (ANI): During the first five months of the current fiscal year, from April to August, the volume of small passenger vehicle (mostly car) transportation by railroads increased by 68% on an annual basis. In recent years, Indian Railways have seen a remarkable increase in automobile traffic.

2,206 rakes were loaded for the same purpose through August of this fiscal year, according to a statement from the Ministry of Railways. It stood at 3,344 for the full 2021–22 fiscal year.

From 1.5% in 2013–14 to 16% in 2021–22, the percentage of passenger vehicle transit using railroads increased.

Because railroads are a more environmentally friendly means of transportation, they not only enable the automobile industry move large volumes swiftly over vast distances, but also allow them the chance to lessen their carbon impact.

The availability of specialised privately owned waggons is just one initiative that has contributed to the increase in car traffic.

The Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) regulation has occasionally been liberalised in response to concerns voiced by industry stakeholders, particularly Society for Indian Automobile Manufactures (SIAM). It enables automakers to own waggons tailored to their requirements, according to a statement from the ministry.

The ministry included a new kind of auto-carrier waggons that are now being finalised in order to accept SUV vehicles.

“Design-modification to the existing NMG waggons (NMGH and NMGHS) is also under execution to facilitate loading / unloading of autos based on the comments obtained from investors/logistics providers.”

The Indian Railway now operates 90 Newly Modified Goods Rakes. Under the Automobile Freight Railway Operator programme, authorised train operators have also added 43 BCACBM rakes.

In addition, new terminals are being made available for car traffic in response to industry requests, it was said. (ANI)
