Jacob Zuma terms efforts to oust him ‘very unfair’

“Nobody has ever provided the reasons,” says the South African President, who in a TV address refused to quit.

South African President Jacob Zuma has said ongoing efforts to unseat him by the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party were unfair, and that he had been given no reason by the party why he should resign.

“It was very unfair to me that this issue is raised,” he said in an unannounced TV interview. “Nobody has ever provided the reasons. Nobody is saying what I have done.”

Graft charges

His reputation stained by years-long allegations of graft, Mr. Zuma has been told by the ANC to step down.

Parliament will hold a vote of no-confidence against Mr. Zuma on Thursday if he refuses to go, the ANC has said.

The struggle has put Mr. Zuma at loggerheads with Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, his likely successor, who is the new head of the ANC.

In the TV address, Mr. Zuma said he would not resign despite party order.
