Reliance will introduce a budget laptop priced at under $15,000: Report

More than 42 crore people are consumers of Reliance Jio. The laptop will be equipped with the JioOS operating system and some Microsoft programmes. Qualcomm chips built on Arm Limited technology will power it.

Soon, Reliance Jio will release a laptop for about 15,000 rupees. According to reports, the low cost laptop is part of the telecom giant’s aim to repeat the success of its Jio Phone in India.

Reliance Jio upended the telecom industry in 2016 with its aggressive price offers for Jio, which included 4G internet bundles and voice service. Reliance Jio announced the JioPhone last year, which costs $81 (about $6,623).

The laptop will be dubbed JioBook and will include a 4G SIM card, according to the rumour. Customers like schools and government institutions will be able to purchase it starting this month. Within the following three months, a consumer launch is anticipated.

Flex, a local subcontractor, will manufacture the JioBook. According to a Reuters article, Reliance Jio raised about $22 billion from international investors in 2020, including KKR & Co Inc. and Silver Lake.

According to a business source who spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity, the JioBook will be as large as the JioPhone. More than 42 crore people are consumers of Reliance Jio. The laptop will be equipped with the JioOS operating system and some Microsoft programmes. It will be powered by Qualcomm chips based on technology from Arm Limited.

JioBook’s main obstacle is competing with industry titans like Acer, Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Microsoft Windows is the operating system of choice for laptops in India. Experts predict that obstacles to adoption will include user awareness.

The laptop will be in direct competition with a few models from Acer, Lenovo, and the Indian company Lava in that price range.

However, it might encounter some opposition in a nation where laptops running Microsoft Windows are the norm.

By Diwali, Reliance Jio plans to roll out standalone 5G services in a few major cities. By December 2023, the business led by Mukesh Ambani’s eldest son Akash Ambani plans to roll out 5G services all across India.

The company is also set to launch 5G Jiophone which is codenamed ‘Ganga’ and will be priced between ₹8,000 and ₹12,000.
